On the afternoon of September 24th, Dr. Alan Paau, Vice Provost for Technology Transfer & Economic Development of Cornell University, and Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal, Academician of Institute of Medicine of the National Academies in the U.S. and Academia Sinica in Taiwan, paid a visit to SYSU. President Xu Ningsheng and Vice President Xu Anlong met with the guests in the VIP Lounge of Zhongshan Building. Liang Yong, Deputy Director of the Office of Medical Science, Meng Cuiyang, Deputy Director of the Science & Technology Office, and Xu Yao, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, attended the meeting.

President Xu Ningsheng expressed a warm welcome to Vice Provost Alan Paau and Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal, and gave a brief introduction to the university and its international cooperation and exchange in recent years.
Vice President Xu Anlong highlighted the development of medical research in our university. Vice Provost Alan Paau made an introduction to Cornell University and its science and technology cooperation projects with other universities in China. Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal briefly introduced her current R&D project, especially expressing her hope to expand cooperation in the Pearl River Delta. The two sides had an active discussion on possible future collaborations.
As Vice Provost for Technology Transfer & Economic Development, Alan Paau is responsible for the strategic management of all technologies and intellectual property that arise from the research activities at Cornell University - both at the Weill Medical College in New York City and at the general campus in Ithaca. Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal is a famous Chinese-American virologist and molecular biologist. She was the first scientist to clone HIV and determine the function of its genes. From 1990 to 2002, she was the Florence Riford Chair in AIDS Research at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Currently, she is the Chief Scientific Officer of iTherX Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

It is a private research university located in Ithaca, New York, United States. The university also administers two other campuses, one in New York City and one in Education City, Qatar.
