SYSU Vice President Wei Minghai Attends the Fifth China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week

At the invitation of the organizing committee of the Fifth China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week, Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU, went to Guiyang to attend the China-ASEAN University Rector’s Forum and chaired the keynote address session on September 17 and 18.

The forum was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education and the People’s Government of Guizhou Province and organized by Guizhou University. The presidents and vice presidents of 27 universities in China including Beijing Foreign Studies University, Yunnan University, Shanghai International Studies University, Southeast University, and 20 universities in ASEAN, and the officers of the ASEAN Secretariat and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), a total of 121 representatives attended the forum.

The theme of the forum is “Keep Going, Promoting the Double 100,000 Goal of Student Mobility”. The representatives reviewed the achievements of China-ASEAN student mobility in the past five years, discussed the problems, and proposed suggestions and solutions. They also exchanged views on the roles and responsibilities of China and ASEAN governments and regional organizations in student mobility and their future plans.

So far, SYSU has signed exchange agreements with several universities in ASEAN, including National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines, Hanoi University and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) in Vietnam, Huachiew Chalermprakiet University and Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand, Southern College and New Era College in Malaysia. The programs mainly include bidirectional joint training of students, student exchange, research collaboration, the sending of Chinese language teachers and volunteers, and textbook compilation.

Since 2008, the China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week has been held for five consecutive times, establishing a comprehensive cooperative partnership in the field of education. Since 2010, China and ASEAN have been actively promoting the “Double 100,000 Goal of Student Mobility”. So far, the number of Chinese students studying in ASEAN countries has exceeded 100,000 and the number of students from ASEAN countries studying in China has surpassed 50,000.
