The co-establishment of a marine economy research center by NMDIS and SYSU is a significant achievement on implementing the SYSU Agreement reached by Ministry of Education (MOE) and SOA, which will bring new life to scientific research on marine education. This research institution will give full play to NMDIS and SYSU’s respective advantages, form a strong alliance, and build a cooperative and shared platform for studies on marine economy. Taking the most urgent strategic, forward-looking and basic problems of current marine economy development into consideration, the institution will focus on marine economy theories, cultivate and train high-level talents of marine economy, hold academic symposium on marine economy regularly, expand international cooperation and exchange. With the aim of “producing ideas, achieving results and cultivating talents”, the institution strives to distinguish itself as a high-standard scientific research base for consulting service and academic exchanges in marine economy.

Over twenty universities under the direct leadership of MOE signed agreements with SOA, while SYSU is the first one that cooperated with a unit directly under SOA to establish an academic entity.
