【South China Daily News】To What Extent Should Government Support Emerging Industries?

International financial crisis and the development of low carbon technology have accelerated the global technology revolution. A new round of industry transformation is surging forward with a magnificent scale. Emerging industries take up a strategically significant position in the process of industry transformation. However these industries involve with high investment, great risks and a long return cycle, private capital still dare not wade into this market. ‘The development of emerging industries calls for the guides of government, otherwise they would fail in the contest for commanding heights.’ ‘it would be a retrogression for government if they intervene after so many years’ execution of market economy’—a heated debate began between government-leaning group and market-oriented group
The intervention of government touched off a public uproar, especially after trials of Shunde and Nanhai in Foshan. Someone even felt alarmed, saying Foshan had altered completely. The topic of ‘what kind of role government should play in the road of emerging industries’ development’ attracted attentions of people from all walks of life.

For this reason, South China Daily News invited four experts--Zheng Xiongwei, Wang Jun, Zhu Wenping, Zhao Ping to the program 'South China Economic Panel’ to discuss profoundly on the topic, with the purpose of exploring new development mode for strategic emerging industries and offering meaningful ideas and suggestions for the industry transformation and upgrading of Guangdong Province.
