A Delegation Led by IUPUI President Visits SYSU

From December 12th to December 14th, Charles Bantz, President of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and his wife Dr. Sandra Petronio, and Prof. Xu Zaocheng, Dean of the U.S. Side of the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis visited Sun Yat-sen University. President Xu Ningsheng, Vice President Yan Guangmei, Deputy Secretary Li Ping, Deputy Secretary Zhu Kongjun, Vice President Wei Minghai, and Assistant President Li Wenjun met with the guests on different occasions. Zhang Zhe, Dean of the Chinese Side of the Confucius Institute in Indianapolis, and persons in charge of SYSU Student Affairs Office, Career Development Counseling Center, Charity Research Center, Human Resources Department, University Dean’s Office, and Office of International Cooperation & Exchange were present at the meeting.

President Xu Ningsheng expressed his hope to establish normal mechanism of cooperation in order to review and promote bilateral cooperation projects, and increase student exchange activities between the two universities. He also hoped to further enhance SYSU's cooperation with Indiana University and Purdue University through IUPUI. President Xu’s proposal was warmly appreciated by President Bantz. Furthermore, both sides also exchanged their opinions about student administration and career development counseling of the joint undergraduate program, and the construction of Confucius Institute in Indianapolis, Charity Research Center, and Teacher and Teaching Development Center.

During the visit, President Bantz and Dr. Petronio gave a lecture on “Sea Turtle and Seaweed: The Value of International Education” and "How to Manage the Doctor-Patient Relationship and Patient Privacy" respectively on Zhuhai Campus and Guangzhou North Campus. Both of them had active interaction and communication with teachers and students present.

IUPUI is an urban campus of Indiana University and Purdue University with acknowledged strength in medical sciences, business and engineering. In 2005, SYSU and IUPUI established a cooperative relationship. The Confucius Institute in Indianapolis was set up in 2007 and has served as a catalyst to deepen the exchange and collaboration between the two universities.
