The Third Shan Hai Forum held at SYSU

On the morning of November 21, the opening ceremony of the Third Shan Hai Forum was held in Swasey Hall, Sun Yat-sen University. The forum brought together scholars from three universities from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, including Sun Yat-sen University, Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung and Xiamen University, to conduct exchanges and discussions on academic issues of common concern. Hung-Duen Yang, President of Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, Zhu Chongshi, President of Xiamen University, Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, and Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU, attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony and the closing ceremony were presided over by Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU.

Secretary Zheng Detao traced the common basis of cooperation and the long history of friendship among the three universities. He believed that the three universities would make remarkable progress in developing traditionally advantageous and featured disciplines through close discussion and cooperation, learning from each other and complementing one another. He also hoped that the three universities could carry out interdisciplinary collaborative research and strive to expand close cooperation and sustainable development in broader fields.

President Hung-Duen Yang recalled the exchanges among the three universities and the impressive achievements of previous Forums in recent years, and introduced the discipline construction of Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung and cross-strait student exchanges. He expressed his vision for the prospects of cooperation among the three universities.

President Zhu Chongshi mentioned the long-lasting friendship between Xiamen University and Sun Yat-sen University as well as Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung. He pointed out that positive progress had been made through increasing interactions in student exchange and school collaboration in recent years. He spoke highly of the practical outcomes of previous Forums and believed that the cooperation and exchange among the three universities would be increasingly close and more achievements would be gained.

After the opening ceremony, Dr. Wang Wei, researcher of the Daya Bay Nuclear Plant and member of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, and Professor Huang Tianji from the Department of Chinese of SYSU, delivered a keynote speech respectively. Subsequently, in order to further promote academic collaborations and enhance research capabilities, the scholars from the three universities carried out heated group discussions on the following 7 academic fields: Marine Environment, Economic Management, Materials Chemistry, Physical Energy, Biomedicine and Medical Equipment, Taiwan Studies, and Higher Education Research.

In the afternoon, at the closing ceremony, representatives from all groups presented the outcomes of their discussions. President Hung-Duen Yang, President Zhu Chongshi, and Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng made concluding remarks respectively.

The Shan Hai Forum is an academic forum co-initiated by Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung, Xiamen University and Sun Yat-sen University, and is hosted by the three universities in turn annually. The forum is aimed at exploring opportunities for future intercollegiate cooperation and enhancing the research capability of the three universities. The First Shan Hai Forum was held in Kaohsiung in December, 2011, and the Second Shan Hai Forum was held in Xiamen University in October, 2012.
