Prof. Simon Evans, Pro Vice-Chancellor of University of Melbourne, visited SYSU

On the afternoon of December 13, Prof. Simon Evans, Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) of the University of Melbourne, visited SYSU. Prof. Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU, and Prof. Li Wenjun, Assistant President of SYSU, met with the guest on different occasions. Prof. Ji Hongbing, Director of the Department of Local Services and Industry-University-Research Collaborations, the Office of Scientific Research and Development of SYSU, and Ms. Xu Yao, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, also attended the meeting.

Vice President Yan Guangmei extended his warm welcome to Prof. Evans, and pointed out that the two universities share a lot in common. He hoped that the two universities can start cooperation in medicine, life sciences and social sciences.

Prof. Evans said that Australia is a popular choice for Chinese overseas students and he hoped that more Australian students can come to China for exchange and study. The two universities reached preliminary intentions in signing a MOU of cooperation, conducting student exchange programs, and holding joint seminars. They also exchanged opinions on collaborations in medicine, information sciences, new materials, environment and energy through the platform of Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City.
 
During Prof. Evans’ visit, Assistant President Li Wenjun also introduced the cooperative programs between SYSU and CMU. Prof. Evans was impressed by SYSU’s international cooperation and expressed his hope to collaborate with SYSU.

Established in 1853, the University of Melbourne is the oldest university in Victoria and the second oldest university in Australia. It is a member of the Group of Eight Australian Universities. It ranked first among Australian universities and 34th worldwide in the 2013-2014 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
