On December 10-11, a 7-member delegation led by Dr. Nasser Paydar, Executive Vice Chancellor of IUPUI, visited SYSU. The members included Dr. Gil Latz, Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs of IUPU, Prof. William Blomquist, Dean of School of Liberal Arts, Prof. David Russomanno, Dean of Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Sara Grethlein, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, Indiana University School of Medicine, Prof. Yaobin Chen, Chair of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, and Prof. Joe Xu, Director of Confucius Institute. The main purpose of the visit was to attend the first meeting of the Cooperative Development Committee. Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU, and Prof. Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU, met with the delegation on different occasions.

On December 10, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng met with Executive Vice Chancellor Nasser Paydar. Prof. Zhang Lihong, Deputy Director of Dean’s Office, Dr. Wang Cheng, Deputy Director of President’s Office, Ms. Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, attended the meeting.
Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President Chen Chunsheng said that the collaborations between the two universities are increasing and SYSU will cooperate with IUPUI on multiple levels and in multiple fields in accordance with the open and practical tradition of SYSU.
Executive Vice Chancellor Nasser Paydar said that SYSU is IUPUI’s most important cooperative partner in Asia and he hoped to deepen communication between the two universities through the mechanism of the Cooperative Development Committee.
Deputy Director of Dean’s Office Zhang Lihong introduced the preparation work of SYSU Teacher Development Center and hoped to draw on the successful experience of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at IUPUI to conduct teacher training, individualized consultation and teaching research.
On the same day, the Cooperative Development Committee held its first meeting. The meeting was jointly presided over by SYSU Vice President Yan Guangmei and IUPUI Executive Vice Chancellor Nasser Paydar, Co-chairs of the Committee. Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Director of Dean's Office of Medical Education Affairs, Prof. Zhan Jiemin, Deputy Dean of School of Engineering, Prof. Wang Fan, Deputy Dean of School of Business, Prof. Zhang Lihong, Deputy Director of Dean’s Office, Ms. Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, Prof. Wen Wushao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange, and representative from School of Philanthropy attended the meeting.
SYSU and IUPUI held the first meeting of the Cooperative Development Committee.
Vice President Yan Guangmei reviewed the establishment of the Cooperative Development Committee between SYSU and IUPUI. He hoped that the two universities can refer to the mode of the SYSU-CUHK Cooperation and Development Committee and deepen cooperation between SYSU and IUPUI.
Executive Vice Chancellor Nasser Paydar stressed that IUPUI is proud of becoming SYSU’s cooperative partner and he expected the meeting will bring fruitful results. Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs Gil Latz expressed that the meeting will definitely promote cooperation between the two universities.
At the meeting, Director of Dean's Office of Medical Education Affairs Xiao Haipeng introduced the medical education at SYSU. He said that the clinical medicine student exchange program between the two universities is going well, and he hoped to increase the number of exchange students, promote faculty exchange program and expand the exchange programs to other medical fields such as public health, pharmacology, nursing and stomatology.
Deputy Dean of School of Engineering Zhan Jiemin and Deputy Dean of School of Business Wang Fan respectively introduced their joint undergraduate programs with IUPUI, the problems encountered and the plans for next-step cooperation. Deputy Director of Dean’s Office Zhang Lihong summarized the status quo and problems of joint undergraduate programs between the two universities. Representative from School of Philanthropy also introduced the general situation of the School.
The two sides exchanged their views on joint educational programs, faculty visits and student exchanges, discussed ways to solve the problems and possible fields of cooperation, and reached many consensuses. The meeting achieved its expected results.
During their visit, members of the IUPUI delegation also visited respectively The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, School of Foreign Languages, School of Chinese as a Second Language, International Business School, School of Sociology and Anthropology, School of Engineering, School of Physics & Engineering, School of Information Science and Technology, as well as the tree SYSU campuses in Guangzhou.
