Former Residence of Mr. Chen Xintao opened to the public

On the morning of October 16, the opening ceremony of Former Residence of Mr. Chen Xintao was held on South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Before the ceremony, Prof. Zheng Detao, Secretary of SYSU Party Committee, met with Mr. Chen Sixuan, Prof. Chen Xintao’s son, and other family members. He said that Mr. Chen Xintao’s glorious achievements and noble pursuits are admirable. We should carry forward his spirit, build our university better and make greater contributions to our country.

The attendees of the ceremony included Mr. Chen Sixuan and his wife, Ms. Chen Jingzhi and her husband, and Ms. Chen Jingwei and her husband (family members of Mr. Chen Xintao); Mr. Li Wei, Vice Chairman of Guangdong Province Returned Overseas Chinese Association; Prof. Zhou Xiaonong, Director of National institute of Parasitic Diseases, Chinese Center For Disease Control and Prevention; Mr. Lin Jinyan, Deputy Director of Guangdong Provincial Center For Disease Control and Prevention; Mr. Wu Xingci, Former Deputy Director of Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Guangdong Province; Mr. Cai Wenan, Director of Center For Disease Control and Prevention of Sanshui District, Foshan City; Prof. Li Baojian, Former Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University; Prof. Li Guiyun, Former Dean of School of Basic Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science; Prof. Zhan Ximei, Former Head of Department of Parasitology, Zhonshan School of Medicine, SYSU; Prof. Wu Yalin from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, designer of the bronze statue of Mr. Chen Xintao; Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU; and Prof. Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU.

Prof. Chen Chunsheng said that Mr. Chen Xintao made great contributions to the medical education at SYSU, the medical development in China and even in the world. Mr. Chen Xintao worked and lived on Konglok Campus (South Campus) for nearly half a century. His life is a true portrayal of the university motto “Study Extensively, Enquire accurately, Reflect carefully, Discriminate clearly, Practice earnestly”. His academic and spiritual legacy still exerts a far-reaching influence on medical education at home and abroad.

Mr. Chen Sixuan thanked SYSU for the efforts to open the former residence, and Prof. Wu Yalin for designing and making the bronze statute. He recalled his childhood spent in the building with his father. He hoped that his father, like other great masters, could inspire the younger generation to contribute to the realization of the Chinese Dream.

Prof. Chen Xintao (1904-1977) is an outstanding parasitologist in China. He made important contributions to the discovery and identification of schistosoma, especially the Chinese paragonimus, the eradication of schistosomiasis, and the prevention and treatment of mites.
