The delegation from University of Cape Town visited SYSU

On December 8-11, 2014, a delegation from University of Cape Town (UCT) led by Prof. Evance Kalula, Director of International Academic Program Office and Foreign Director of Confucius Institute in UCT (CI-UCT), visited SYSU. Members of the UCT delegation also included Associate Professor Denver Hendricks, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Health Sciences; Associate Professor Clive Chandler of School of Languages and Literatures; Prof. Qin Shengyong, Chinese Director of CI-UCT; and Ms. Yang Yu, coordinator of CI-UCT. Prof. Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU, met with the guests, accompanied by Prof. Ling Wenhua, Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange (OICE), and Ms. Gu Wenli, Deputy Director of OICE and Executive Deputy Director of Office of Confucius Institutes.

Prof. Yan Guangmei extended a warm welcome to the delegates and learned about the recent development of CI-UCT. He said that SYSU would expand academic cooperation and student exchange with UCT.

The Medical Science Cooperation Seminar was presided over by Prof. Ling Wenhua. Associate Professor Denver Hendricks had a discussion on cooperation and student exchange with Prof. Gao Guoquan, Deputy Dean of Zhongshan School of Medicine; Prof. Zhang Xi, Chief of Cardiac Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of SYSU; Prof. Huang Yuehua, Assistant Dean of Liver Disease Hospital of SYSU; and Associate Professor Zeng Gucheng, Key Laboratory of Tropical Diseases Control, Ministry of Education.

The seminar on CI-UCT was presided over by Ms. Gu Wenli. Prof. Chang Chenguang, Vice Dean of Faculty of International Studies and Foreign Languages; Prof. Zhou Xiaobing, Dean of School of Chinese as a Second Language; Prof. Wen Wushao, Director of Experimental Teaching Center, attended the meeting. Prof. Evance Kalula introduced the achievements of CI-UCT and the working plan for 2015. The participants discussed the working plan and gave their opinions on related issues.

The delegation also visited Museum of Medical Specimens, Medical Simulation Center, The First Affiliated Hospital, The Third Affiliated Hospital, Library on East Campus, National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, and SYSU-CMU Joint School of Engineering.

Founded in 1829, the University of Cape Town (UCT) is the oldest university in South Africa. The Confucius Institute in UCT was established by SYSU and UCT in 2010.
