On December 10-11, 2014, an 8-member delegation led by Dr. Charles Bantz, Chancellor of IUPUI and Executive Vice President of Indiana University (IU), visited SYSU. Members of the IU/IUPUI delegation also included Dr. Zebulun Davenport, Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs, IUPUI; Dr. Gil Latz, Associate Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, IUPUI; Dr. David James Russomanno, Dean of Purdue School of Engineering and Technology, IUPUI; Dr. Mary Beth Riner, Associate Dean for Global Affairs of School of Nursing, IU; Dr. Thomas Davis, Associate Dean for Academic Programs of IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI; Dr. Joe Xu, Director of Confucius Institute in Indianapolis; and Mr. Steven Yin, Manager of the new IU China Gateway Office in Beijing.
The second meeting of SYSU-IUPUI Cooperative Development Committee
On December 10, the SYSU-IUPUI Cooperative Development Committee (CDC) held the second meeting, which was jointly presided over by Prof. Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU and Co-chair of the CDC, and IUPUI Associate Vice Chancellor Gil Latz. The SYSU participants included Prof. Xiao Haipeng, Chairman & Vice President of The First Affiliated Hospital and Director of the Dean’s Office of Medical Education of SYSU; Prof. Wen Wushao, Director of Office of International Key Projects and Director of Public Experimental Teaching Center; Prof. Zhan Jiemin, Associate Dean of School of Engineering; Mr. He Hong, Deputy Director of University Dean’s Office; and Dr. Wu Menji, Director of Confucius Institute in Indianapolis.
Prof. Yan Guangmei extended a warm welcome to the delegates. He said that many achievements have been gained since the the first meeting of SYSU-IUPUI CDC at the end of last year. He hoped that the meeting this year would deepen cooperation between the two universities.
Dr. Charles Bantz said that this was his third visit to SYSU and his first time to attend the CDC meeting. He hoped to facilitate IUPUI’s increasingly deep relationships with SYSU through the CDC.
Dr. Gil Latz reviewed the collaborations between the two universities in research projects, student exchanges, joint degree programs, faculty visits during the past year. The cooperation covered the fields of engineering, medicine, anthropology, sociology, law, education and philanthropy, etc.
At the meeting, Prof. Zhan Jiemin introduced the School of Engineering’s 2+2 undergraduate program with IUPUI. Prof. Xiao Haipeng introduced SYSU’s medical education and hoped to send more SYSU medical students to IUPUI for study and research training. Mr. He Hong introduced SYSU’s preparation to establish the Center for Teaching Development, and hoped to gain help from IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning.
The two sides discussed relevant issues and reached many consensuses on deepening and expanding cooperation.
The delegation visited Office of Student Affairs, School of Philanthropy, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, School of Engineering, School of Information Science and Technology, School of Nursing, School of Foreign Languages, School of Chinese as a Second Language, and held talks with representatives of Publicity Department, School of International Business, School of Sociology and Anthropology. They also had a tour of the South Campus, North Campus and East Campus of SYSU.
