On December 7-8, 2014, at the invitation of Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), Prof. Zhu Xiping, Vice President of SYSU, went to Xiamen to attend the 9th Confucius Institute Conference. Ms. Gu Wenli, Executive Deputy Director of Office of Confucius Institute of SYSU, also attended the conference.

This year is the 10th anniversary of Confucius Institute. A total of over 2,000 people attended this year’s conference, including directors of Confucius Institutes, presidents of the host universities, representatives of the Chinese partner universities or institutions, the education departments (commissions) of related provinces (autonomous regions or municipalities), and the Chinese embassies in foreign countries.

During the conference, Prof. Zhu Xiping met with Mr. Pan Feng, Cultural Counselor of Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, and discussed the construction and development of the Confucius Institute at Ateneo de Manila University. Prof. Zhu Xiping also met with presidents of host universities as well as directors of Confucius Institute at Ateneo de Manila University, Confucius Institute in Indianapolis, Confucius Institute at Autonomous University of Yucatan and Confucius Institute at University of Cape Town. They discussed successful experiences and issues in the construction of Confucius Institute, and proposed plans for future development.

At the conference, Dr. Charles Bantz, Chancellor of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), USA, gave a speech on enhancing the partnership between the Chinese and foreign institutions. Prof. Evance Kalula, Director of Confucius Institute at University of Cape Town, South Africa, gave a speech on division of work and cooperation between Confucius Institute Director and Chinese Director. M.V.Z. Alfredo F.J. Dájer Abimerhi, President of Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY), Mexico, won “Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence Award”.
