Sun Yat-sen University Spring Banquet for Hong Kong and Macau Held

On April 13, 2015, Sun Yat-sen University Spring Banquet for Hong Kong & Macau was held in Hong Kong with the aim to thank the academic circle, social elites and alumni in Hong Kong and Macao for their long term support.

On behalf of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a welcoming speech. Since its establishment, SYSU has received generous support from alumni and friends in Hong Kong and Macao. K.K. Leung Hall, built with the donation from Dr. Leung Kau Kui, is the first university building donated by compatriots from Hong Kong and Macao after the reform and opening up in China. The Henry Fok Sports Center, donated by Dr. Henry Fok Ying Tung, is the first National Collegiate Sports Training Center in China. Dr. Henry Fok Ying Tung and his family also contributed to the establishment and development of Sun Yat-sen Business School; Dr. Ma Man Kei and his family have supported SYSU in many fields. Dr. David Sin Wai Kin and other social elites in Hong Kong donated the Advanced Academic Research Center of SYSU. The SHKP-Kwoks' Foundation established its first scholarship in SYSU. Hong Kong Society for the Promotion of Virtue also established scholarship in SYSU.
Last year during the 90th anniversary celebrations of SYSU, members of the First SYSU Advisory Board in Hong Kong and Macao, including Mr. Ian Fok, Mr. Chan Wan Ho, Mr. Ma Iao Hang, Mr. Yu Kwok-chun, Mr. Francis Choi, Mrs. Pollyanna Chu, Mr. Charles Yeung and Ms. Cheung Yan, made generous donations of over 100 million yuan.
Alumni in Hong Kong and Macao have shown great support for the development of SYSU: Dr. James T. Wu and other alumni in the Board of Trustees of Lingnan (University) College have donated 11 buildings and over 200 million yuan; Dr. Tsang Hin-chi is the alumnus who donated the most amount to SYSU; the alumni couple Mr. Chan Wan Ho and Mrs. Chan Lau Sau Yuen set up “Fulan Award” to support disciplinary construction and leading young talents at SYSU.
In recent years, SYSU has established long term cooperation relations with universities in Hong Kong and Macao. SYSU has formed strategic partnership with The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University respectively. SYSU has built 15 joint research platforms in Hong Kong and Macao, such as the State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China (Partner Laboratory in The Chinese University of Hong Kong), State Key Laboratory on Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies (Partner Laboratory in The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), Macao Polytechnic Institute- Sun Yat-sen University Center for Gaming Studies, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong - Sun Yat-sen University Centre for Historical Anthropology. At present, SYSU is collaborating with universities and research institutes in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao to construct the Collaborative Innovation Center for the Cooperation and Development of Hong Kong, Macao and Mainland China.
Each year more than a thousand students from Hong Kong and Macao are studying at SYSU. SYSU has joint degree programs with The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. SYSU has also organized training courses for talents from Hong Kong and Macao.
Prof. Luo Jun pointed out that the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge under construction will bring Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao closer together. SYSU will make use of the geographical advantage of Zhuhai Campus to build the “one hour” academic exchange circle in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, promoting cooperation in scientific research, faculty exchange, talent cultivation and social service.
