Accelerating innovation-driven development

On April 27, 2015, Prof. Zheng Detao, Party Secretary of Sun Yat-sen University, and Prof. Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University, conducted survey and research on the innovation-driven development in Panyu District, accompanied by Mr. Lu Yixian, Secretary of the CPC Panyu District Committee, and Mr. Lin Weichang, Deputy Mayor of Panyu District.

The group visited National Digital Home Application Demonstration Industrial Base, Health Industrial Park of Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, and Panyu Energy Saving Science and Technology Park. They learned about the research and development in BGI-Guangzhou, and the plan to jointly establish a “maker center”.
After the field trip, the two sides held a meeting to discuss further cooperation between SYSU and Panyu. Mr. Lu Yixian introduced the implementation of innovation-driven development strategy in Panyu District and the construction of Guangzhou International Innovation City. He stressed that SYSU is an indispensable resource for innovation in Guangdong province, and he hoped that SYSU and Panyu would deepen the industry-university-research cooperation.
On behalf of the university, Prof. Zheng Detao thanked the CPC Panyu District Committee and the People’s Government of Panyu District for their long term support for SYSU. He said that this survey will bring important implications for SYSU to implement the innovation-driven development strategy, meet the social and economic development needs of Panyu, and accelerate the construction of a world-class university. He pointed out that Panyu has created a favorable environment and platform for innovation and entrepreneurship, and he hoped that SYSU and Panyu will explore new fields of cooperation on the basis of existing collaborations.
Prof. Luo Jun made a summary speech. He said that Panyu has its advantages in science and technology park construction as well as science and technology incubation. He pointed out that SYSU will enhance cooperation with Panyu in four aspects: first, strengthen cooperation in scientific research and talent cultivation with high-tech enterprises such as BGI, and promote collaborative innovation between government, industry, university and research; second, attract investment from the provincial and municipal government as well as social resources to build innovation and entrepreneurship incubation base for university students; third, establish incubation platform for translational medicine to support the development of biomedicine and health industry in Panyu; fourth, promote the construction of national level platform for microelectronics disciplines to support the industrial transformation and upgrading in Panyu.
