On May 4, 2015, the CYL Guangdong Provincial Committee and Guangdong Youth Association announced the list of recipients of the 17th Guangdong Youth May 4th Medal. Mr. Hu Chunhua, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, met with representatives of the winners.

Guangdong Youth May 4th Medal is the highest award in Guangdong province to commend excellent youth and youth groups. This year, there are 10 group award recipients and 10 individual award recipients. Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center Volunteer Team of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) won the group award. Three SYSU alumni, namely, Liu Guoguang, Hu Deliang and Zhao Gansen, won the individual award respectively.
Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center Volunteer Team, which is made up of young doctors and nurses, has offered volunteer services for over 20,000 hours, providing eye care education, diagnosis of eye diseases and cataract surgeries free of charge, helping 5,000 cataract patients regain eyesight.
Mr. Liu Guoguang, an undergraduate in Finance (1994-1998) at SYSU, is now a deputy section chief in the Economic Crime Investigation Bureau of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department. He worked in the UN peacekeeping mission area in Liberia in 2013 and was awarded a UN medal in May 2014.
Mr. Hu Deliang, an undergraduate in Computer Science (1995-1999) at SYSU, is now chairman of Baiyun Power Group. In 2004, after obtaining his master’s degree overseas, he returned to China to join his family business, assuming the position of assistant to the chairman of Baiyun Power Group. Within 11 years the company’s output value increased by nearly 24 folds.
Mr. Zhao Gansen, an undergraduate in Computer Science (1996-2000) and postgraduate in Computer Software and Theory (2000-2003) at SYSU, studied for his PhD at the University of Kent (2004-2007). He is now a professor and doctoral supervisor in South China Normal University. In addition to teaching and research, he is devoted to promoting public welfare through science and technology.
