On May 9, the 2015 Conference on Medical Sciences was held on North Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). The university leaders, distinguished scholars and professors from medical schools and affiliated hospitals, and heads of relevant functional departments attended the conference.

Vice President Li Mengfeng presented a report on the development status of medical education, medical research, affiliated hospitals and medical talent teams at SYSU. He said that SYSU’s overall strength in medical sciences is among the top in the nation, with top academic disciplines and innovation teams, complete medical service systems, rich medical resources, strong clinical research and translational medicine, and high-level medical education. Through data analysis, he pointed out the existing problems and future development goals.
President of The First Affiliated Hospital Xiao Haipeng, Director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center Liu Yizhi, and Director of Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center Xu Ruihua gave speeches, analyzing the existing problems in discipline construction, scientific research and faculty development, and making proposals for the thirteenth five-year plans for their respective hospitals.

President Luo Jun delivered a speech entitled “Deepening Reform, Doing Solid Work, and Constructing World-class Medical Sciences at SYSU”. He emphasized that enhancing medical sciences will improve the University’s capacity to serve local communities. The long history and current strengths of medical sciences at SYSU have laid a solid foundation for constructing world-class disciplines. He put forward the University’s measures for medical reform and development in the period of the thirteenth five-year plan, including cultivating excellent clinicians, implementing the clinical tutor system for undergraduate medical students, combining basic teaching and clinical teaching in medical education, constructing the institute for translational medicine, establishing a big data center for medical sciences, reforming the evaluation system for the promotion in the clinical title series, and making a long-term plan for North Campus.
In the group discussion session in the afternoon, the participants expressed their views on the medical reform and development at SYSU, and the group representatives presented reports on their discussions.

Secretary Zheng Detao made a summary speech. He pointed out that we should have a clear understanding of our opportunities and challenges, strengths and weaknesses, development goals and approaches. We should improve medical quality, strengthen scientific research, build talent teams, improve infrastructure, and deepen management reform. He said that the university will provide guidance and support in policies and resources to help the affiliated hospitals make top-level designs for future development.
