NSFC and Guangdong Provincial Government sign agreement to jointly fund big data research

On the morning of May 23, 2015, the signing ceremony of the agreement between National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Guangdong Provincial Government to jointly fund big data research was held in Guangzhou Baiyun International Convention Center. Prof. Yang Wei, President of NSFC, and Mr. Zhu Xiaodan, Governor of Guangdong Province, signed the agreement on behalf of the two sides respectively. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Chen Yunxian, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province.

The agreement is in accordance with the strategic needs of science and technology development in the country and Guangdong Province. It will give full play to the guiding role of NSFC and the data and computation resources of Guangdong Province in leading the basic research in big data science and promoting the development of big data industry. As part of the NSFC programs, the big data research program will center around smart city construction, health and medical care, etc, gather innovation talents and technological resources to solve major scientific and technological issues in field of big data. Using Tianhe-2 supercomputer at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou as a platform, the big data research program will select and fund projects across the country.
Prof. Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University, Mr. Huang Ningsheng, Director General of Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and Mr. Wang Dong, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, attended the signing ceremony.
