A delegation led by Ambassador of the European Union to China visited SYSU

On May 21, 2015, a delegation of 28 ambassadors and consul generals from 22 EU member countries led by H.E. Dr Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, Ambassador of the European Union to China, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, met with the delegation, accompanied by Prof. Pang Zhongying from School of Asia-Pacific Studies of SYSU, and Ms. Xu Yao, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation & Exchange of SYSU.

President Luo Jun extended a warm welcome to the delegation, and introduced SYSU’s history, development and cooperation with EU member countries. H.E. Dr Hans Dietmar Schweisgut said that it was his first visit to Guangdong since he assumed office, and he was glad to visit SYSU. This year is the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the EU and China. The two sides hoped to strengthen cooperation and exchange between SYSU and universities in the EU.

After the meeting, H.E. Dr Hans Dietmar Schweisgut delivered a speech entitled “40 Years of EU-China Cooperation: Global Partners for Global Challenges” in Swasey Hall, attracting nearly 200 SYSU faculty and students. He talked about EU founding ideas, background and objectives, and EU as an example of successful model of regional integration. He discussed the structure and scope of EU-China cooperation, and the challenges and plans for the future.

In the panel discussion session, the five ambassadors of Estonia, Poland, Luxemburg, Romania and Portugal to China discussed EU-China cooperation in the fields of economy, education and cultural exchange with the audience.

Through the lecture and discussion, SYSU faculty and students had a clearer understanding of the EU and China-EU relations.
