Mayor Chen Jianhua visits SYSU

On the afternoon of July 8, 2015, Mr. Chen Jianhua, Mayor of Guangzhou, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), accompanied by Mr. Wang Dong, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, as well as leaders from the Guangdong Intellectual Property Office and relevant departments of the Guangzhou municipal government.

Prof. Luo Jun, President of SYSU, Prof. Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of SYSU, Prof. Ma Jun, Vice President of SYSU, and Prof. Xia Lianghui, Assistant President of SYSU, attended the meeting.

Prof. Zhai Zhenming from the Department of Philosophy at SYSU introduced the “Virtual Reality” project. Prof. Yuan Xuefeng, Director of the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou (NSCC-GZ), reported on the work of the Center in the first half of 2015.

Mayor Chen Jianhua said that the Guangzhou municipal government will provide support for the “Virtual Reality” project. He emphasized that the National Natural Science Foundation of China will support the development of NSCC-GZ. We should make good use of the “Tianhe-2” supercomputer in talent cultivation and software applications development, and enable NSCC-GZ to play a bigger role in public services. He suggested that the Guangzhou Science, Technology and Innovation Commission and SYSU should draft a plan to explore more scientific and effective mode of management. He hoped that NSCC-GZ, which is located on SYSU’s East Campus, will enhance the construction of computing science and promote the development of engineering science at SYSU.

President Luo Jun pointed out that the “Virtual Reality” project should grasp the opportunity of development, and make full use of the advantages of the supercomputer to construct the characteristic discipline. He said that NSCC-GZ should serve the local social and economic development as well as the transformation and upgrading of enterprises, and become an important base for cultivating supercomputing talents. He suggested that more improvement should be made in software technology, talent team, management mechanism and operational mode. SYSU will use its strengths and advantageous resources to promote the development and application of NSCC-GZ.

Before the meeting, the group also visited the Human-Machine Interface Lab in the Department of Philosophy at SYSU.
