Professor Chen Chunsheng Appointed Secretary of SYSU Party Committee

On the afternoon of September 18, 2015, at a meeting held in Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), Professor Chen Chunsheng was appointed as Secretary of SYSU Party Committee. Mr. Zhong Haidong, Inspector and Deputy Director of the Third Cadre Bureau of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, announced the decision of the CPC Central Committee. Mr. Du Yubo, Vice Minister and Deputy Secretary of CPC Leading Group of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Zheng Qingshun, Deputy Director of the Organization Department of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, attended and addressed the meeting. Mr. Liu Dawei, Director General of the Department of Personnel of the Ministry of Education, and Mr. Jing Lihu, Deputy Secretary of the Education Working Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, attended the meeting, which was chaired by Professor Luo Jun, President of SYSU.
 

 

Professor Chen Chunsheng appointed as Secretary of SYSU Party Committee
 

Chen Chunsheng, a native of Jiexi, Guangdong Province, was born in Chenghai, Guangdong Province in August 1959. He graduated from the Department of History at Sun Yat-sen University in 1982 and obtained his doctorate in history from Xiamen University in 1989. He is now a professor in the Department of History at SYSU, holding concurrent positions as Deputy Director of the Ministry of Education Teaching Steering Committee for History, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Education Steering Committee for Liberal Arts Education in Colleges and Universities, convenor of the Discipline (Chinese History) Appraisal Group of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, Vice President of China’s Institute of History and President of the Guangdong Institute of History.

Professor Chen was appointed Deputy Head of the Department of History in 1991, Vice Dean of the School of Humanities in 1994, and Dean of the School of Humanities in 2000. In 2001 he was made Director of the Center for Historical Anthropology, a key research base of humanities and social sciences approved by the Ministry of Education. In March 2008 he became Vice President of SYSU and a member of the Standing Committee of SYSU Party Committee. In March 2012 he was appointed Executive Deputy Secretary of the SYSU Party Committee and Vice President of SYSU. He was appointed Secretary of SYSU Party Committee in September 2015.

Professor Chen's main research interests are in the teaching and research of Chinese social and economic history, historical anthropology and historiographical theories. He has made considerable accomplishments in the fields of cliometrics and historical anthropology, and won the first prize of the Award for Achievements in Social Sciences by Guangdong Province twice and the first prize of the Award for Research Achievements in the Humanities and Social Sciences by the Ministry of Education. He was granted the title of “Cross-Century Excellent Talent” and the “Award for Young Teachers in Higher Education” by the Ministry of Education. He was selected as a "national candidate" of the New Century Top 100, 1,000 and 10,000 Talents Project by the Ministry of Personnel.

Professor Chen has lectured in universities in the U.S., the U.K., Sweden, Japan, Singapore, Russia, and Hong Kong and Taiwan, and collaborated with researchers from these countries and regions. He completed his postdoctoral research at McGill University in Canada. He is a visiting professor or academic consultant in more than 10 universities at home and abroad.
