Dr. Nick Campbell, Executive Editor of Nature, visits SYSU

On the morning of November 12, 2015, a three-member delegation led by Dr. Nick Campbell, Executive Editor of Nature and Head of Nature Publishing Group (NPG) for Greater China, visited Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Prof. Yan Guangmei, Vice President of SYSU, met with the guests in Zhongshan Building on South Campus.

SYSU representatives in attendance at the meeting also included Prof. Songyang Zhou, Dean of School of Life Sciences; Prof. Song Erwei, Vice President of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital; Ms. Dong Meiling, Division Chief of Office of Scientific Research; Dr. Wang Lixia, Deputy Director of Publicity Department; Ms. Huang Weie, Deputy Director of Human Resources Department; and Mr. Ian Heuer from Office of International Cooperation & Exchange.

Prof. Yan Guangmei extended a warm welcome to the guests and introduced the general situation and recent development at SYSU. Dr. Nick Campbell introduced NPG’s business in China. The participants’ discussion focused on issues like expanding the university’s academic impact, recruitment of high-level talents, and improving the quality of papers.

After the meeting, Dr. Nick Campbell gave a lecture entitled “Nature, Open Access, and You!” to SYSU faculty and students in Swasey Hall. He introduced Nature’s Open Access journals, Nature sub-journals, and selection criteria for papers. He also offered advice on writing papers. The lecture was welcomed by the audience. This opportunity for face-to-face communication is sure to prove helpful in deepening the understanding of top academic journals among SYSU faculty and students, and promises to benefit the University in its continuing drive to publish high-level research results.
