The Proposal Seminar on the Major Project of the National Social Sciences Fund Hosted by Professor Li Wei Was Held in SYSU

The proposal seminar on a 2012 major project of the National Social Sciences Fund was held on South Campus on January 5, 2013. The project, which is presided over by Professor Li Wei from the Chinese Department, is entitled “Study of Treasured Chinese Literature from Overseas and Southern Chinese Varieties in the Ming and Qing Dynasties” (Project No. 12& ZD178). Members of the research team from at home and abroad participated in the seminar. The evaluation panel consists of Professor Tang Yuming, Professor Zhou Xiaobing and Professor Zhu Qizhi from Sun Yat-sen University; Professor Shao Jingmin and Professor Peng Xiaochuan from Jinan University.

Professor Li Wei, chief expert of the research team, made the opening report and introduced in detail the research background, contents, methods, significance and objectives of the project. The evaluation panel led by Professor Tang Yuming spoke highly of the opening report and agreed that the research, with solid foundation, outstanding features and scientific argumentation, is of great academic value and social significance.

Professor Tang Yuming said that the successful approval and concrete implementation of the project had “a positive effect on the discipline construction of Linguistics in the Department of Chinese at Sun Yat-sen University.” He encouraged the research team to balance team coordination, collection of materials and publication of achievements, cultivate research talents, produce more high-level works to expand the influence of the discipline of Linguistics in the Department of Chinese in the academia.

Professor Shao Jingmin, President of Guangdong Chinese Language Association, pointed out that, “Study of Treasured Chinese Literature from Overseas and Southern Chinese Varieties in the Ming and Qing Dynasties” is the first major project of the National Social Sciences Fund in the field of linguistics in Guangdong Province. It is not only a pride for Sun Yat-sen University but also a pride for the whole linguistic field in Guangdong Province. The project is of great significance for deepening the study on the history of Chinese language, especially the historical development of the Chinese language in southern China.

After the opening report, members of the research team had an in-depth discussion on relevant issues for one and a half days. Professor Zhuang Chusheng made the literature review on “Study of Treasured Chinese Literature from Overseas and Southern Chinese Varieties in the Ming and Qing Dynasties”. The members present discussed issues such as the collection, collation and study of the Chinese documents preserved overseas. The sub-research groups respectively discussed in detail the key points, basic methods and theoretical perspectives concerning the ontological study of language. Through the seminar, members of the research team got a better understanding of the contents, methods and objectives of the research.
