The Comprehensive Scientific Survey of Biodiversity from Luoxiao Range Region in China launched successfully

On September 28, the launch meeting of the project “The Comprehensive Scientific Survey of Biodiversity from Luoxiao Range Region in China” was held on the South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University. It is a project under the National S&T Basic Work Program. SYSU Assistant President Xia Lianghui, Secretary of School of Life Sciences Wu Shaoxin, Executive Deputy Dean of School of Life Sciences Shu Wensheng, Academician Zhuang Wenying, Professor Gong Huili and 7 other experts, as well as members of the 13 participating units and postgraduate students, a total of over 80 people were present at the meeting.

Assistant President Xia Lianghui delivered a speech on behalf of the University. Deputy Dean Shu Wensheng said on behalf of the School of Life Sciences that it would provide every convenience for the project. The Forestry Department of Jiangxi Province, one of the participating units, expressed its congratulations and promised to give full support on its part.

The Principal Investigator Professor Liao Wenbo introduced the project and how it would be conducted. Members of the expert team put forward many suggestions regarding survey methodology, survey route, selection of paradigmatic mountains, number of samples, application of new technology and new methods, regional cooperation, talent cultivation, results sharing, and database construction, laying the foundation for the project.

The National S&T Basic Work Program supports basic researches that meet the major needs of national economic, social, scientific and technological development. Luoxiao Range lies in the border areas among Jiangxi, Hunan and Hubei provinces, covering 14 cities and 55 counties. There are 68 natural reserves with immense biodiversity. This project is significant in the protection and sustainable development of the upstreams of Gan Jiang and Xiang Jiang as well as the poverty-relief work in Luoxiang Range.
