The launching ceremony and work report meeting of the Guangdong Division of NRSCC successfully held

On February 25, 2014, the launching ceremony and work report meeting of the Guangdong Division of the National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC) were held in Sun Yat-sen University. The Guangdong Division of NRSCC led by SYSU is approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The attendees of the meeting included Liao Xiaohan, Director-General of NRSCC; Ye Huping, Supervisor at NRSCC; Zhao Xiandong, Supervisor at NRSCC; Li Mengfeng, Vice President of SYSU; Liu Lin, Director of Guangdong Division; Zhang Yuanxun, Secretary of School of Geography and Planning of SYSU; and Dong Meiling, Deputy Director of Office of Scientific Research and Development of SYSU. Relevant universities in Guangdong province, leading experts from enterprises, teachers and students from the School of Geography and Planning of SYSU also participated in the meeting. Director-General Liao Xiaohan and Vice President Li Mengfeng jointly unveiled the Guangdong Division of NRSCC.

Vice President Li Mengfeng said that through the NRSCC mode of “condensed kernel, wide network”, the Guangdong Division will rely on the big platform of NRSCC to take an active part in promoting interdisciplinary applications of sensing technology in multiple fields and making contributions to the country and society. SYSU will enhance mechanisms and policies to guarantee a successful operation of the Guangdong Division.

Director Liu Lin gave a report on the research results achieved by the Guangdong Division and its goals and plans for future development. Leaders and experts extended congratulations on the establishment of the Guangdong Division and proposed their suggestions.

Director-General Liao Xiaohan delivered the concluding remarks. He introduce the functions of the departments in NRSCC, approved the scientific research abilities, talents and disciplinary advantages of the Guangdong Division in earth observation and navigation technology, as well as its leading role in developing remote sensing in Guangdong. He pointed out that the Guangdong Division should make full use of its advantages to promote the rapid development of earth observation and navigation technology in China.

The Guangdong Division of NRSCC was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in December, 2013. It is led by SYSU with joint efforts from other universities, research institutes and relevant enterprises in Guangdong. Based in Guangdong and covering South China, the Guangdong Division aims to conduct research in earth observation and navigation technology, provide relevant information and technological support for regional resources and environment survey, ecological environment protection and treatment, natural disaster monitoring and regional socioeconomic development, and serve as an important base for sensing technology research and development and talent training.
