SYSU and PolyU held the opening ceremony of Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Machine Intelligence and Advanced Computing The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Branch

On March 5, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held the opening ceremony of “Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Machine Intelligence and Advanced Computing The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Branch” at PolyU. Professor Alexander Wai, Vice President (Research Development) of PolyU and Professor Xia Lianghui, Assistant President of SYSU, hosted the opening ceremony. The attendants also included Professor H.C. Man, Dean of Faculty of Engineering of PolyU, Professor Cao Jiannong, Head of Department of Computing of PolyU, Professor Zhang Jun, Dean of School of Advanced Computing of SYSU, and Ms. Dong Meiling, Deputy Director of Office of Scientific Research and Development of SYSU.

Vice President Alexander Wai pointed out that the establishment of the branch laboratory serves as a recognition of PolyU's distinctive success in undertaking world-class research and delivering high-quality education over the past 40 years. It will not only foster the long-term collaborations in the fields of machine intelligence and advanced computing between PolyU and SYSU, but also benefit educational and research development in the Pearl River Delta region.

Assistant President Xia Lianghui said that built on the solid foundation of the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Machine Intelligence and Advanced Computing at SYSU, the branch laboratory will enhance the training of talented young researchers and promote the research and academic exchanges between SYSU and PolyU. Combining the research strengths of the two universities, the laboratory will advance the technology frontier and make contributions to the nation's development.

At the opening ceremony, Professor Cao Jiannong and Professor Zhang Jun respectively introduced the research basis in relevant fields, the background and contents of cooperation.

The Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Machine Intelligence and Advanced Computing at SYSU was established in 2006 and has kept close cooperation with PolyU. The branch lab marks a deeper level of cooperation between the two institutions in the field of information, including big data technology, wireless sensor network application and mobile cloud computing.
