The 3rd Lingnan Forum held at SYSU

On March 30, the 3rd Lingnan Forum was held at Sun Yat-sen University with the theme of “Seeking Momentum for Chinese Economic Reform”. The forum was co-sponsored by Lingnan (University) College, Sun Yat-sen University and Caixin Media, bringing together nearly 1,500 attendees, including senior government officials, business executives and academic scholars. This year’s forum focused on the potential that China’s new wave of economic reform may unleash and how to better handle the relationship between the government and the market to seek momentum for economic growth.

Mr. XU Shaohua, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Executive Vice Governor of Guangdong Province, gave the opening remarks at the forum. He welcomed all participants and expressed his hope that the forum would bring more great minds and shared ideas to Guangdong for its reform and opening-up.

Prof. XU Ningsheng, President of Sun Yat-sen University, extended his warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to all the attendees. He highly praised the success of Lingnan Forum in the past two years and extended continuous support from the University.

Keynote speakers including Mr. CHEN Deming, President of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits of the People's Republic of China; Mr. WANG Xinkui, Standing Committee Member of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference; Mr. XU Shanda, Former Deputy Director of the State Administration of Taxation; and Mr. TIAN Qing, Member of Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, were invited to deliver speeches on topics of “Market System and International Regulations in the Global Context”, "Why China’s Reform Is Now Driven by Opening-up", "Comprehensive Tax Reform" and “The Traditional Chinese Culture Is the Driving Force for Reform” respectively.

In the Financial Reform Dialogue, Mr. YANG Kaisheng, Committee Member of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Special Advisor to the China Banking Regulatory Commission, and Former President of Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, and Mr. LI Yi, Chairman and Country Head of UBS AG, China, were engaged in the dialogue, which was hosted by Ms. HU Shuli, Editor-in-Chief of Caixin Media and Dean of the School of Communication and Design, Sun Yat-sen University.

Lingnan Forum proceeded with two panels of round-table discussions, revolving around the topics “A New Wave of Financial Innovation” and "Relationships between Government, Industry and the Market”. The first round-table discussion was presided over by Mr. WANG Peng, a famous host from Guangdong Television (GDTV) and the guests engaged are: Dr. Jih-Chu Lee, Chairperson, Taiwan Financial Holdings and Bank of Taiwan; Mr. WAN Jianhua, Chairman of the Board, Guotai Junan Securities Co., Ltd.; Mr. WANG Wei, Chairman of the Chinese Museum of Finance; Mr. CAI Hongping, Chairman of Investment Banking of Deutsche Bank for the Asia region; Prof. LU Jun, Associate Dean of Lingnan (University) College, Professor in Finance. The second panel was hosted by Prof. ZHANG Jianqi, Lingnan and the invitees were: Mr. LI Chunhong, Director General of Guangdong's Development and Reform Commission; Mr. ZHANG Wenkui, Deputy Director Enterprise Research Institute, Development Research Center of the State Council; Mr. LI Dongsheng, Chairman of TCL Corporation; Mr. LI Chuyuan, Chairman of Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings Ltd.; Mr. LIU Hong, Vice Chairman and CEO of LeTV.com; Mr. QIU Changheng, Vice President of Alibaba; Mr. FENG Xingya, Deputy General Manager of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., Ltd. The guests shared their views and had in-depth discussions on Financial Innovation, Internet Finance, Allowing Private Capital into Banking, Development Prospects of Banks, Financial Regulations, The Relationship between the Government and the Industry, The Marketization of Public Service Sector, and Enterprise Innovation in Taiwan.

At the end of the forum, Prof. LIU Mingkang, Honorary Dean of Lingnan (University) College, former Chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission and Chairman of the Lingnan Forum, delivered a keynote address with the theme of “The Modernization of National Governance and Capacity”. He stressed that the experience of the modernization of national governance comes down to "decision-making” and “implementation".

The closing speech for the forum was made by Prof. XU Xinzhong, Dean of Lingnan (University) College and Executive Chairman of Lingnan Forum. On behalf of Lingnan (University) College, Dean XU Xinzhong expressed his sincere gratitude to all the participants for their great support for Lingnan Forum. He addressed the objectives and significance of the forum. China needs more than the wisdom of scholars and this forum is the platform to bring together a rich pool of knowledge and ideas by listening to different kinds of voices from business elites, senior government officials and research scholars, with the aim to provide intellectual support for the reform.
