Lecture on Marine Sciences held on Zhuhai Campus

The lecture entitled “Marine Mammal Research Overview on Bioacoustics” was held on Zhuhai Campus on the evening of April 14, 2014. It was the 9th lecture of Lectures on Marine Sciences (4th in 2014) under the auspices of the School of Marine Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University. Professor Paul Eugene Nachtigall, the director of Marine Mammal Research Program from the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii, and Researcher Li Songhai of the Sanya Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering of Chinese Academy of Sciences were both invited as the guest speakers.

During the lecture, Professor Paul Eugene Nachtigall shared his research findings in part as well as some experience derived from his work in Naval Ocean Systems Center about dolphins having military trainings. Recent findings of the newest researches on dolphin’s echolocation and audition were also introduced to the audience. Researcher Li Songhai lectured to the audience of students on the research of marine mammal bioacoustics, especially the aspects of the subject’s history, present situation and research methods, with a combination of pictures, audios and videos.

With hearty rounds of applause, the whole lecture came to an end. The students present communicated actively with the guests. Both Professor Paul Eugene Nachtigall and Researcher Li Songhai encouraged more young students to join the field of marine mammal bioacoustics and fill the gap of such studies in China.
