SYSU held a seminar to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of meteorologist Chen Shixun

In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Chen Shixun, distinguished meteorologist and founder of SYSU’s Department of Meteorology, Sun Yat-sen University held a seminar on tropical climate change on the morning of October 9, 2014. Experts in the field of atmospheric sciences from many institutions such as University of Hawaii, University of Cologne, The Met Office, UK, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, Peking University, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Numerical Weather Prediction Center of China Meteorological Administration, and Yunnan Meteorological Service, attended the seminar.

Prof. Li Ping, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Prof. Wen Zhiping, Head of Department of Atmospheric Sciences of SYSU; Prof. Zeng Qingcun, Academician of Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Mr. Zhuang Xudong, Deputy Director of Guangdong Meteorological Service; Prof. Chen Longxun from Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences; Prof. Luo Huibang, Prof. Liang Biqi and Prof. Yang Song from Sun Yat-sen University; Mr. Liang Jianyin, Director of Guangzhou Meteorological Bureau; and Ms. Zhang Yanlan, wife of Mr. Chen Shixun, attended and addressed the seminar. They recalled Mr. Chen Shixun’s academic life, rigorous scientific attitude, unremitting efforts and great contributions to the development of meteorological education and atmospheric sciences in China.

Essays in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Mr. Chen Shixun was launched at the seminar. Prof. Qiu Rongliang, Dean of School of Environmental Science and Engineering of SYSU, presented the book to Ms. Zhang Yanlan, wife of Mr. Chen Shixun.

Then, the experts gave lectures on global climate change, numerical climate simulation, interaction between the tropical and extratropical atmosphere, and ancient climate change, showing the latest research directions and results to the attending teachers and students.
