The Seminar on the Major Project “Study of Treasured Chinese Literature from Overseas and Southern Chinese Varieties in the Ming and Qing Dynasties” Was Held in SYSU

The seminar on a 2012 major project of the National Social Sciences Fund was held on South Campus of SYSU from November 29, 2014 to November 30, 2014. The project, which is presided over by Professor Li Wei from the Department of Chinese, SYSU, is entitled “Study of Treasured Chinese Literature from Overseas and Southern Chinese Variaties in the Ming and Qing Dynasties”. More than 30 members of the research team from at home and abroad participated in the workshop, having an in-depth discussion on the Chinese documents preserved overseas and the relevant language issues during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Professor Li Wei, chief expert of the research team, made a brief introduction about the progress of the project to date. Then the scholars had an academic discussion on the papers presented.

The seminar received a total of 22 papers, 21 presented. The papers, which cover the areas of phonology, syntax, lexicology, philology, etc, involve Cantonese, Hakka, Min, Wu, Zhongyuan Mandarin and other dialects. The papers presented make full use of the Chinese documents overseas, take into account the regional differences and historical changes of Chinese. The papers include both detailed description and in-depth theoretical discussion, demonstrating the research achievements of the team members in their areas.

After the presentation section, Professor Zhuang Chusheng made a brief summary, where he considered the papers presented as of high quality, which reflected the state of the art in various research areas. He also encouraged the research team to make persistent efforts and achieve better results.
