On February 2, 2015, Elsevier released the list of 2014 Most Cited Chinese Researchers, which includes 1,651 Chinese researchers. 43 scholars at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) are among the list. Excluding the Chinese Academy of Sciences, SYSU is ranked sixth among Chinese universities according to the total number of scholars included in the list.

The methodology used in the list of 2014 Most Cited Chinese Researchers is developed by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. The statistical data is based on the Scopus database from Elsevier. Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature and features tools to track, analyze and visualize scholarly research.
