On July 2, 2015, the Education Department of Guangdong Province announced that 7 universities including Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), and 18 disciplines including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, are respectively selected into the key construction universities and key disciplines construction projects of the Guangdong High Level Universities Program.

A special fund of 5 billion yuan is established by the Guangdong Provincial Government for constructing high level universities, which will be used in disciplines construction, scientific research, industry-university-research collaboration, talent team construction, research services and support platforms.

With years of support from the Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province, SYSU is striving to become a world-class university. According to the disciplines evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2012, SYSU has 16 disciplines ranked among top five; according to the latest statistics by Essential Science Indicators (ESI), SYSU has 17 disciplines in the top 1% in the world, ranked 2nd among universities in China.

In order to build a world-class university and serve the innovation-driven development of Guangdong Province, SYSU will be oriented toward academic frontiers, national major strategic needs, national and regional economic and social development, and realize all-round development in the humanities, sciences, medicine and engineering. SYSU will implement the construction of big teams, big platforms and big projects, gather innovation resources to promote Guangdong’s innovation-driven development strategy, raise the overall level of school running, and improve the capabilities to nurture innovative talents.
