On September 9, 2015, the Education Department of Guangdong Province released the list of the 2015 Pearl River Scholars Program for Higher Education Institutions in Guangdong Province. Five professors at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) are appointed as Distinguished Professors of the Pearl River Scholars Program. They are Prof. Liu Kexuan from The First Affiliated Hospital, Prof. Xie Youshun from Department of Chinese, Prof. Shi Junqi from Lingnan (University) College, Prof. Ji Hongbing from School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and Prof. Luan Tiangang from School of Life Sciences.

Up till now, SYSU has a total of 46 distinguished professors and 1 chair professor of the Pearl River Scholars Program.
