Roundtable on China-Pacific Islands Trade, Investment and Development Cooperation was held in SYSU

October 29, 2015, the Pacific Islands Mission visited National Centre for Oceania Studies, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU). Roundtable on China-Pacific Islands Trade, Investment and Development Cooperation, one of the series activities of Institute of Advanced International Studies, SYSU, was held in conference room 1, 5th floor, Liberal Arts Building, SYSU.

In the welcome speech, Prof. PANG Zhongying, Dean of School of International Relations and Institute of Advanced International Studies, SYSU, said that Guangdong province has innate advantages and important significance to develop relations with the Pacific island countries, as an economic and cultural center in south China. Institute of Advanced International Studies and National Centre for Oceania Studies would be committed to promoting the development of their relations.

In the keynote speeches, David Morris, Trade Commissioner of Pacific Islands Trade & Invest China and Associate Professor WANG Xuedong, Deputy Director of National Centre for Oceania Studies separately focused on overview and conclusions from the Pacific Islands Mission and sustainable development challenges.

In the panel discussion, delegates of Pacific Islands Mission and scholars of SYSU discussed on learnings and future questions about China – Pacific Islands economic cooperation.

At last, Associate Professor YU Changsen, Executive Director of National Centre for Oceania Studies, SYSU made a summary. He emphasized that trade, invest and development cooperation have played a big role in developing China-PICs relations. Meanwhile, he pointed out that there is a long way before real mutual understanding between us. China should pay more attention to social and environmental effect, etc.

The conference was good for Institute of Advanced International Studies and National Centre for Oceania Studies, SYSU to develop communication and cooperation with PICs.
