Sun Yat-sen University and Researchers of Library and Information from Drexel University Jointly Organize a Group Meeting in the 78th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology

The 78th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology was held in St. Louis, Missouri on November 6-10, 2015. In this meeting, the Research Institute of Library & Information Science (RILIS) of SYSU and the Center for the Study of Libraries, Information, & Society of Drexel University jointly organized a group meeting themed “Cultural Diversity in LIS Research: National and International Communities as Context for the Study of Ethics, Policy, and Education”.

In the meeting, Associate Professor Zhang Jing, Associate Dean of School of Information Management at SYSU, Associate Professor Tang Qiong and Associate Professor Zhou Yi made a report entitled “Ongoing LIS Research Initiatives in SYSU”, which covered the research results achieved by RILIS in library rights studies and publicities, drafting the Guangzhou Public Libraries Legislation and preservation and conservation education and training, and RILIS’s leading role in the study of innovating Chinese Library Science through the international vision. Meanwhile, representatives from SYSU also had a discussion with other representatives present on the issue about how scholars of Library Science took part in the government’s decision-making and legislation, as well as the social reform issue.

This is the first time that researchers of Library & Information Science of SYSU have collaborated with foreign universities on the organization of a group meeting in the annual meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology.

Since 1937, the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), as the most influential professional association in the field of Information Science in the world, has been devoted to promoting the application of Information Science and Information Technology in related fields, and establishing a new system of information professionalism in the information society. ASIS&T now has brought together a lot of famous scholars from all over the world in various research fields, such as Information Science, Computer and Engineering Science, Linguistics and Library Science. This annual meeting, with a theme “Information Science with Impact: Research in and for the Community”, invited many distinguished scholars from University of Illinois, University of Pittsburgh, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, University of Edinburgh and other renowned universities. During the meeting, they shared some innovative ideas and frontier issues in the study of Information Science, and jointly discussed the current situation and the future of information and communication in the government management and social development.
