On the morning of September 12, 2016, the opening ceremony of the International Workshop on Turbulent Mixing and Sediment Transport in the Ocean took place on the South Campus of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou. Professor Jun Ma, Vice President of SYSU, and Professor Colin Jago, Dean of the College of Natural Sciences in Bangor University (BU), gave opening speeches respectively. Professor Jiaxue Wu from SYSU chaired the opening ceremony that had more than 150 attendees including undergraduate and graduate students.

Turbulent dynamics and transport of particular matters is an un-resolved challenging question faced by the international scientific community. In many important fields such as ocean/marine dynamics, marine sedimentology, marine biology and geochemistry as well as marine ecology, the turbulent mixing and the associated transport processes of sediments or particular matters is a basic scientific question at the forefront of marine sciences. In particular, some critical aspects of this question have become a research barrier. Under this context, Prof. Jiaxue Wu from School of Marine Sciences, SYSU in China and Prof. Tom P Rippeth from School of Ocean Sciences, BU in the UK have initiated the international workshop “Turbulent Mixing and Sediment Transport in the Ocean” that was held on September 12 -14, 2016 in Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China. There are six themes in this workshop, which attracted more than 150 participants including more than 10 renowned and influential scientists from UK, USA, France, Germany, Taiwan and Hong Kong, as well as those representative scholars from Chinese mainland and their group members. The 45 oral presentations and approximately 30 poster presentations form a very fruitful workshop. Mr Jianguo Ren, Director of the Division of Ocean Sciences in the National Natural Science Foundation of China, also came to Guangzhou specially for this meeting.

The meeting on September 12 consists of two sessions: 1) Marine turbulence and mixing; and 2) Marine/coastal boundary layer processes. The invited speakers include Prof. John H Simpson from BU who is a leading expert in estuarine and coastal oceanographic dynamics, Prof. Stephen Monismith from Stanford University, Prof. Tom Rippeth from BU, Prof. Ruo-Shan Tseng from National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, Prof. Dake Chen from the Second Institute of Oceanography in China, Prof. Dongxiao Wang from South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS, Prof. John Z. Shi from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Prof. Jingping Xu from Ocean University of China.

On September 13, the meeting mainly focused on the themes of Coastal/estuarine sediment transport, and Coastal morphodynamics and sedimentology. The invited speakers for these themes include Prof. Hans Burchard, a leading expert on marine turbulence and mixing, Prof. Colin Jago from BU, Prof. Shu Gao from State Key Laboratory for Estuarine and Coastal Research, Prof. James T Liu from National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan, Prof. Zai-jin You from Ludong University, Prof. Jiaxue Wu from Sun Yat-sen University, and Dr. Wenyan Zhang from Germany.

On September 14, the meeting concentrated on the themes of Ocean dynamics and ecological responses, and Novel instrumentation and measurements. The invited speakers include Prof. Minhan Dai, Dean of Faculty of Geosciences in Xiamen University, Prof. Corinna Schrum from Germany, Prof. Jianping Gan from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Dr. David Hurther from France.

After all presentations on each day of the workshop, the invitees of the meeting, John Simpson and Jingping Xu, Shu Gao and Hans Burchard, Tom Rippeth and Jiaxue Wu, organized the discussion sessions, which focused on, but not limited to the meeting themes. The theme discussions came up with hot topics, forefront questions in this field, and challenging questions to be tackled in the near future.

After this workshop, excellent presentations on turbulent mixing and sediment transport in the ocean will be recommended to be published at the high-profile journal. There will need a further clarification about international cooperation and project application. There are 1 invited presentation given by Prof. Jiaxue Wu and 7 oral presentations by Prof. Wenping Gong, Dr. Junjie Deng, Associate Professor Chunhua Qiu, Dr. Heng Zhang, Dr. Zhaoyun Chen, Doctoral student Qianjiang Zhang and Master student Mengxi Hu, all from School of Marine Sciences, SYSU. In particular, the presentations of two graduate students received positive feedbacks and encouragement from international experts. This workshop has been highly praised by domestic and international peers as a high-level conference, and is a wonderful platform for international collaboration.
