Prof Mark H.Thiemens, Academician of National Academy of Sciences of US and Professor of University of California Appointed Visiting Professor of SYSU and Gave Academic Lecture in SYSU
March 24 morning, the appointment ceremony and academic seminar for Prof Mark H.Thiemens, academician of National Academy of Sciences of us and professor of University of California, took place on the south campus. On behalf of SYSU, Xu Anlong, Deputy-president of SYSU, issued the employment letter to Mark H. Thiemens as visiting professor of SYSU, and extended welcome and appreciation to him. Luo Teng, Personnel Director, Li Shiyu, Dean of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Yang Linjian, Secretary of Party of SYSU and more than 100 students from our school had present at the ceremony and the lecture.
Subsequently after the appointment ceremony, Prof Mark H.Thiemens gave a lecture titled "new methods for the study of Climate change, planets and the origins of life ", through which he presented his research development in climate change, planets, and the origins of life.
The source said that Prof Mark H. Thiemens is the finder of Mass-independent Isotope Fractionation and the author of the relevant theory, which has been widely used in various research fields including environmental change, biological origin, and the origin of the solar system, planetary atmosphere. It has recently been applied to fields including medicine, genetic engineering and nano-materials technology. He had published 23 papers in science and nature and received numerous honors, including the highest honor of science Ernest O. Lawrence Medal Award from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Association's highest honor award of geochemistry Goldschmidt Medal. In 2006, an asteroid was named (7004) after Markthiemens.
