Research Team Led by Professor Zhou Jianying Makes Great Progress in the Research of Designing Photonic Crystal
Photonic Crystal, with its unique photonic band gap, can realize precise control on photons’ radiation and spreading. Since 1980s when photonic crystal was put forward, people have been making great efforts in the research of photonic crystal and gained a series of important achievements. However, the high-speed & magnanimous photonic device, due to its difficulty in design and preparation, has been developing slowly. Therefore, it is of great scientific importance and application value.
Recently, Professor Zhou Jianying from the School of Physics and Engineering Technology, cooperating with Academician Yuri. D. Treyakov from Russian Muscovite University and Professor Thomas F. Krauss from England St Andrews University, has successfully designed and prepared a new kind of photonic crystal – a photonic crystal made up of imaginary part of refractive index. Relevant achievements were published on , a famous international journals recently issued.
The new kind of photonic crystal designed by Professor Zhou possesses special photonic properties: this photonic crystal is formed by transparent medium doped with absorption materials equates to an even-structured bulk material when deviating from its absorption peak, but displays the characteristics of photonic crystal at certain wave band and light intensity. This kind of dualistic property is of broad application value in the field of high-speed quantum information processing and photons cache. The co-labors of this research - Professor Thomas F. Krauss from St. Andrews University of England and Academician Yuri. D. Treyakov from Muscovite University of Russian, are both world-famous scholars in physical materials. They provided important technical supports in sample preparation for the research.
One of the primary authors of this research - Doctor Li Juntao, who was graduated from the School of Physics and Engineering, won the famous “Marie Curie Fellowship” (This award is for the outstanding young scholars worldwide). At present, he is conducting relevant research at St. Andrews University of England. After graduation, the doctoral students in this research group will go to St. Andrews University of England, Israel Weizmann Academy of sciences and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to continue relevant researches and conduct cooperative research with the state key laboratory of optoelectronic materials and technologies of SYSU.
It is also said that, another research “Laser beams synthesis technique based on phase control non-linear transformation frequency” (, Vol. 18, p2995 (2010) ) was reported recently by British Institute of Physics as the most important research progress and bright spot in physics of Asia-Pacific region.
