School of Environmental Science Organized an Interchange Activity With Two Other Universities - "Asian Program for Incubation of Environmental Leaders”

From February 21st to 28th , Sun Yat-sen Universtiy (SYSU), Tokyo University and Hong Kong Universtiy of Science and Technology (HKUST) jointly organized an interchange activity named “Asian Program for Incubation of Environmental Leaders (APIEL)—The Project in Great Pearl River Delta” which was specifically aimed at postgraduate students. This was the second time these three universities cooperated since the successful conclusion last year.

The event was held in SYSU and HKUST respectively. Experts specialising in environmental science from Tokyo University, HKUST, Hong Kong Government Environmental Protection Department as well asSchool of Environmental Science, School of Law, Lingnan (University) College and other departments of SYSU gave several seminars on the issues concerning with the most advanced progressin environmental science and engineering, the industries transferand the sustainable developmentin Pearl River Delta, the cooperation in fields of environmental protection between Guangdong Province and Hong Kong, the qualities essential for environmental leaders and etc.22 postgraduates from these three universities who participated in the talks also formed groups, in which they discussed and proposed their measures for the future development of Pearl River Delta. Additionally, they all joined in the investigations of local industries precincts, ecology conservation, sanitary conditions of enterprises and the implementation of circular economy in cities such as Dongguan and Guangzhou.

The serious environmental problems faced by Pearl River Delta whose economy is developing rapidly and consistently in recent years has sparked close attentions from experts domestically and internationally. “Asian Program for Incubation of Environmental Leaders (APIEL)—The Project in Great Pearl River Delta” focuses on the state of local environment during its developing process and the cultivation of Asian environmental leaders who are able to solve these problems through a wide range of international communications and in-depth explorations. Seven postgraduate students from School of Environmental Science, School of Law, Lingnan (University) College of our university attended this activity. Participants said this well-designed international interchange activity helped them expand their outlook, deepen their understanding on the regional environmental issues and foster their abilities to cooperate under the condition of internationalization, all of which were extremely beneficial to them. Three universities have agreed on continuing organizing APIEL interchange activities in the future.
