The opening ceremony took place on the morning of September 21, chaired by Prof. Wang Biao, Dean of the School of Physics and Engineering (SPE). President Xu Ningsheng delivered a speech at the ceremony, thanking the Chinese Physical Society for giving SYSU the opportunity to host this distinguished academic meeting and welcoming the distinguished guests and representatives. President Xu looked back at the development of physics in SYSU. He said that SYSU set up the discipline of physics since its foundation and a considerable number of renowned professors of physics have taught in the university. SYSU’s physical science has been expanded and optimized after years of efforts, having its obvious characteristics and strength in basic and applied research, and enhancing its ability to be of service to national and local economic development. The history of SYSU’s physical science is actually a part of that of China’s physical science. He also hoped that experts and scholars could generate new ideas and viewpoints in the course of the meeting and that they could support and help SYSU’s physical science as ever before.
