In recent years, Sun Yat-sen University has made certain progresses in talent cultivation, scientific research, social service and cultural continuity, which has poured new vitality into the development of the university.
Collaborate with world-class education institutions to set up joint schools
Collaboration between SYSU and Ecole Normale Super Paris in the fields of mathematics and theoretical physics was initiated in 2007 and 2008 respectively. In December 2009, SYSU signed an agreement with FINUCI (Consortium français de formation d’ingénieurs en nucléaire civil) to co-establish Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering & Technology, which officially started its enrollment in 2010.
In November 2011, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou Municipal Government and Carnegie Mellon University signed an agreement to co-establish “SYSU-CMU Joint Institute of Engineering”. At present, SYSU is negotiating with Johns Hopkins Medicine to jointly set up an education and research institute in clinical medicine and translational medicine.
Actively participate in large international science and technology collaboration programs
SYSU actively takes part in AMS-02 Experiment, a large international collaboration program in the world's leading field of space technology and space experiment.
SYSU is also an active participant in the construction of Guangzhou Supercomputer Center, whose supercomputer pilot system has been at work officially. On 25th November 2011, Guangdong Provincial Government, Guangzhou Municipal Government, National University of Defense Technology and Sun Yat-sen University signed an agreement on building a world-leading supercomputer center in SYSU by the end of 2015. By far, the construction of the pilot system has been accomplished and its computing power can reach 340 trillion times per second.
Use intellectual advantages to serve the economy and society
On August 13, 2011, General Secretary Hu Jintao inspected “Yuexiu Beijingie Family Service Center”, a collaborative project between Sun Yat-sen University and Guangzhou Municipal Government. General Secretary Hu Jintao fully affirmed this new mode of community service. On October 13, 2011, Premier Wen Jiabao inspected the Huadu Research Institute of Sun Yat-sen University, and he positively commented on such in-depth cooperation mechanism between university, research institute and enterprise.
To assist the economic and social development in the West of China, SYSU has established a university primary Party branch with the highest altitude. In 2006, the SYSU Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Peculiar Bio-resources Research Station was established at Nyingchi in the Tibet Autonomous Region (4,156m altitude) to conduct research on cordyceps sinensis. A primary Party branch was also set up there and the local cadres and masses complimented it as the highest university primary Party branch in China. On August 9, 2010, Comrade Wang Yang, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, visited the station and fully approved the work of the station.
Giving full play to its advantages in medical science, SYSU has launched various medical and health services. Since 2005, SYSU has organized high-level medical service teams to go to the western border areas to carry out the “Health Train” program. SYSU medical teams also took a major part in the “5·12” earthquake relief work and have participated many times in foreign medical aid work.
