Peter Sands pointed out in his lecture that the global economic crisis had distinctive regional features. The Western economy is still facing significant challenges while the European debt crisis has not found its way out and the US has to take further actions to restrain its economic loss. Although financial crisis in Asia seems to have a slower process, China should pay close attention to its sustainable development strategy despite its recent stable growth.

When talking about his career path, Peter Sands joked that he was a lucky person who got a right job at the right time. As early as in 2006, when the financial crisis was on, Peter had to generate counter-crisis strategies in a very short time to ensure Standard Chartered to go through the hard time. He shared his experience such as making good use of a positive balance sheet structure to maintain corporate development; leading a team to work towards a shared goal, and etc., which enabled Standard Chartered to navigate the financial crisis.

In respect of career development, Peter gave advise to the audience that the adventure spirit sometimes was necessary to push yourself forward. Money is important in life but it is not our destination. It is more important to find a job which we are interested in and good at. During the Q&A session, Peter gave his professional and insightful answers to RMB globalization, the supervision of China’s banking industry, and etc.

Peter Sands' visit to Lingnan College to share his insights on banking and finance as well as his career and life provided a good opportunity for students to broaden their horizons.
