The 10th Symposium on Functional Linguistics and Discourse Analysis, co-hosted by School of Foreign Languages and Functional Linguistics Institute at SYSU, was held successfully in the School of Foreign Languages at SYSU on November 21. The theme of the symposium is "system, corpus and translation".
Professor Chang Chenguang from SYSU, Professor He Anping from South China Normal University, Professor Hu Kaibao from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Professor Huang Guowen from SYSU, Professor Susan Hunston from University of Birmingham, Professor Peng Xuanwei from Beijing Normal University and Professor Jonathan Webster from City University of Hong Kong had in-depth discussions on topics such as “Corpus Linguistics and SFL”, "Corpus Building through Integrated Collaborative Annotation with Enhanced Visualization Tools”, "Chinese-English Conference Integrating Corpus”, and “Chinese-English Parallel Corpus of Appraisal Meanings” as speakers at the symposium, and interacted actively with the participating teachers and students. At the end of the symposium, Professor Huang Guowen expressed that the disciplinary integration of system, corpus and translation should be promoted in future research, pointing the direction of development and application of functional linguistics in China.
The symposium provided a platform of high-level academic exchange for teachers and postgraduate students of foreign languages, promoted the communication of research findings, broadened academic horizons, let attendees have access to the latest developments of linguistics, and enhanced the cooperation and communication between SYSU and other renowned universities.
