International Conference in Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of China-Australia Diplomatic Relations Held at SYSU

"Historical Experience and Current Status: International Conference in Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of China-Australia Diplomatic Relations” was held in SYSU on December 6 and 7. About twenty experts and scholars from China and Australia gathered at Sun Yat-sen University to discuss issues related to China-Australia relations.

Wei Minghai, Vice President of SYSU and Director of the Centre for Oceanian Studies, and the Honorable Henry Tsang, former Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney, MP and Parliamentary Secretary to three New South Wales Premiers, attended the opening ceremony and made speeches. Professor Han Feng, President of the Chinese Association for Australian Studies; Professor Liu Shusen, Director of the Center for Oceanian Studies, Peking University; and Professor Andrew O'Neil, Director of the Griffith Asia Institute, gave keynote speeches at the opening ceremony.

During the two-day conference, participants focused on four themes, including historical evolution of China-Australia relations; China-Australia economic relationship; China-Australia security relations and the U.S. factor; and the rise of China and the adjustment of China-Australia relations.

The International Conference was sponsored by the Center for Oceanian Studies, Sun Yat-sen University, and co-organized by the Griffith Asia Institute and the Center for Oceanian Studies, Peking University. A book launch was held at the opening ceremony for the collection entitled China-Australia Relations: towards a Community with Shared Interests — in Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of China-Australia Diplomatic Relations, jointly edited by Professor Chang Chenguang, Professor Yu Changsen, and Dr Henry Tsang.
