Recently, a building plan of “State-Province Joint Engineering Laboratory of IOT Chips and System Application Technologies” backed by Sun Yat-sen University was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and its unveiling ceremony was held at the 13th China Hi-Tech Fair in Shenzhen. Following the State-Province Joint Engineering Laboratory of Digital Home Interactive Application, it is the second state-province joint engineering laboratory whose construction is led by SYSU. It is also the only national-level research and development platform approved by the state in the field of IOT within Guangdong province, the first state-province joint engineering laboratory located in Huadu District, another breakthrough made by the University in the construction of national-level technological innovation platform. Up until now, the number of national-level research platforms in the field of science and engineering in SYSU has reached 10.

The State-Province Joint Engineering Laboratory of IOT Chips and System Application Technologies centers around the common crucial technology of a strategic emerging industry the Internet of Things (IOT), focuses on tackling key technological difficulties in producing chips and systems used in identification, sensing and positioning, accelerates the process of improving the standardized framework and industry application standard for IOT’s perception layer, provides services such as designing, testing, detecting and commercializing IOT Chips and System Application Technologies, establishes an effective channel for transforming research findings into engineering technologies, serves as an important source of independent technological innovation, builds a supporting platform for developing companies’ innovating abilities, realizes the joint innovation of universities, research institutes and enterprises, promotes the upgrade and transformation of traditional industries as well as the development of emerging industries, accumulates knowledge stock, reduces technological outflow, and turns the IOT industry into a highly competitive and continually developing power in the construction of smart cities.

The National Development and Reform Commission launched a building plan of State-Province Joint Engineering Research Center (Engineering Laboratory) in 2010. The research center is a new move by the state to improve and enhance the country’s ability of innovating independently through tapping into the advantages of regional economic growth and industry features. SYSU attaches great importance to the construction of national-level technological innovation platform through concentrating advantageous disciplines and integrating resources, and up until now has established 4 state-province joint engineering laboratories in the field of science and engineering, including 2 joint engineering laboratories constructed by SYSU and enterprises, to ensure that the University’s advantageous fields can play a positive role in national technological innovation system.
