The First Nanyue Publication Award ceremony was jointly held by the Publicity Department of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and the Administration of Press and Publication of Guangdong Province in Guangzhou on January 14, 2013. Guangdong government officials including Tuo Zhen, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Director General of the Publicity Department of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee, and Lin Shaochun, Deputy Governor of Guangdong Province, attended the ceremony and presented awards to the award-winning publishers and figures. The Editorial Department of the Journal of Sun Yat-sen University won the First Nanyue Publication Award for Advanced Publisher. Director General Tuo Zhen presented the award medal and certificate to Professor Wang Jianhua, Director of the Editorial Department of the Journal of Sun Yat-sen University.

Nanyue Publication Award, the highest award in the publishing industry of Guangdong Province, is divided into five categories: excellent publishing figure award, advanced publisher award, book award, periodical award, and audio-visual, electronic and web publication award. The selection will be made every three years and the first selection mainly reviewed the performance in the past five years.

The Editorial Department of the Journal of Sun Yat-sen University earned the award for the important influence of its Social Science Edition, Natural Science Edition and Medical Science Edition in the publishing industry, as well as its good working guidelines and effective management. It is the only one in the list of award winners that concerns university journals.
