The Forum on Students Survey and Assessment of Chinese Higher Education held in SYSU

On April 2, the Forum on Students Survey and Assessment of Chinese Higher Education cosponsored by the School of Education, Sun Yat-sen University and the Graduate School of Education, Peking University was held in Swasey Hall, SYSU. Wang Zhanjun, Deputy Director of the Higher Education Evaluation Center of the Ministry of Education; Li Yanbao, member of the National Education Advisory Committee; P. T. Terenzini, past president of the Association for the Study of Higher Education; Hu Zhenmin, Deputy Director-General of Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Wu Daguang, Vice President of Xiamen University; Ye Zhihong, Deputy Secretary-General of China Association of Higher Education; Wen Dongmao, Dean of Graduate School of Education, Peking University; and Chen Chunsheng, Executive Deputy Secretary and Vice President of Sun Yat-sen University, attended the opening ceremony of the Forum. Professor P. T. Terenzini and Professor Li Yanbao delivered a keynote report respectively, which were entitled "Can't see the wood for the trees: a reflection on the factors that influence the study of American students” and “A new trend in the reform of undergraduate education in China”.

Centering on the theme of “Students Survey and Assessment of Chinese Higher Education”, the Forum invited Motohisa Kaneko, Professor at the Research Center for University Studies, University of Tsukuba; Dr. Hu Shouping, Professor of Higher Education, College of Education, Florida State University; Dr. Chang Tongshan, Institutional Research Content Manager, University of California Office of the President; Naoyuki Ogata, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education, The University of Tokyo; and Wang Liyun, Associate Professor at the Department of Education, National Taiwan Normal University and Director of Taiwan Teacher Education Database, to give a report respectively and to discuss the students surveys and analysis results in different countries and regions. Wu Daguang, Vice President of Xiamen University; Shi Jinghuan, Executive Vice Dean of Institute of Education, Tsinghua University; Lu Genshu, Director of Institute of Higher Education, Xi’an Jiaotong University; Gong Fang, Director of Institute of Higher Education, Nanjing University; Bao Wei, Associate Professor of Graduate School of Education, Peking University, and Qu Qiongfei, Deputy Dean of School of Education, Sun Yat-sen University probed into the research situation and results of students surveys in China on the basis of the work of their respective universities, and had heated discussions with the colleagues from different universities, who are engaged in higher education research and management. Hunan University and other universities also introduced the results of their practical research.

The International Forum on Students Survey and Assessment of Chinese Higher Education further interpreted the good cases and precious experience of overseas student surveys and shared the current research achievements and methods of domestic universities. With the idea of “regarding students as the foundation, regarding quality as the core”, the Forum shared and explored the combination of applied research in higher education and higher education management, which is regarded as an important and practical attempt of higher education research.
