The undergraduate innovative experiment program is an important implementation of the “Undergraduate Teaching Project". Under the guidance of instructors, the undergraduate students or teams independently carry out research and study, design experiment routes and methods, organize equipment and materials, implement the experiments, analyze and process the data, and compose summary reports and academic papers. The program is aimed to support excellent students to carry out scientific research, experiment, invention and innovation; explore and establish the teaching mode of centering on problems and issues; promote research-oriented study and personalized training; deepen the reform of talent cultivation mode, create innovative atmosphere and build innovation culture; improve the quality of teaching and training; accelerate the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents and excellent applied engineering talents to meet the needs of regional economic and social development; and provide strong talent and intellectual support in order to promote the shift of economic development mode.
Based on such platforms as “innovation training program”, "entrepreneurship training program”, and “entrepreneurial practice program”, SYSU has established a multi-level “undergraduate innovative ability training system”, including undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training programs at national, provincial and university level respectively.
From 2006 to 2012, SYSU has spent 10.07 million yuan in funding 463 national projects, 728 provincial projects and 1,544 university projects, involving about 15, 000 students. In 2013, SYSU has obtained 115 projects of national undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training programs (including “innovation training program”, "entrepreneurship training program”, and “entrepreneurial practice program”), and 300 projects at Guangdong provincial level. These high quality innovation and entrepreneurship projects, led by undergraduate students, greatly enhance the students' innovative spirit and practical ability, and also promote the continuous and in-depth development of the university’s teaching practice.
