2013 China International Finance Society Academic Summit held in Lingnan College

On April 20, the China International Finance Society Academic Summit & 2013 Studies of International Finance Forum (Spring) was held in Lingnan College. The forum was co-sponsored by China International Finance Society, the Editorial Board of Studies of International Finance and Lingnan College of Sun Yat-sen University. Wang Yongli, Executive Vice President of Bank of China; Yu Shiyou, Deputy Secretary of SYSU Party Committee; Song Hai, Honorary Director of the Institute of Finance and Professor of Lingnan College; Huang Zhiqiang, Director of Institute of International Finance of Bank of China and Editor-in-Chief of Studies of International Finance; Bai Zhizhong, President of Guangdong Branch of Bank of China, attended the forum. Editor-in-Chief Huang Zhiqiang and President Bai Zhizhong delivered an opening speech respectively.

The theme of this forum is “China and international finance under the new situation: challenges, opportunities, innovation and development”. Nearly 80 scholars, experts and doctoral students from 25 universities and research institutions including Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Nankai University, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Xiamen University, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Bank of China, gathered together to have in-depth discussions on the major issues and hot issues in current international finance and the reform and development of China's financial industry.

Deputy Secretary Yu Shiyou extended a warm welcome to the guests on behalf of Sun Yat-sen University. He said that, international finance is the core of modern economy, and currently, China's financial reform reaches its critical moment. In this context, the conference studies the major issues and hot issues in China international finance and the reform and development of China's financial industry, and researchers from the Institute of International Finance of Bank of China, scholars and experts from different universities will discuss and reach a consensus, resulting in beneficial outcomes.

In the keynote speech session, Executive Vice President Wang Yongli profoundly analyzed a number of hot issues in the field of international finance. Professor Song Hai analyzed the important role played by the development of financial technology industry in economic transformation and upgrading. Zong Liang, Deputy Director of the Institute of International Finance of Bank of China; Professor Zhang Liqing, Dean of School of Finance, Central University of Finance and Economics; Professor Chen Xuebin, Executive Deputy Dean of Institute for Financial Studies, Fudan University; Professor Liang Qi, Dean of School of Economics, Nankai University; Professor Zhao Xijun, Deputy Dean of School of Finance, Renmin University of China; and Professor Wang Xi, Deputy Dean of Lingnan College, Sun Yat-sen University, analyzed and discussed respectively about “Market-oriented financial reforms and consolidated operating”, "Reform of global monetary system and RMB internationalization”, "Preliminary ideas of self-balancing interaction pegged to the international monetary system”, "Financial crisis”, "State-owned shares and capital investment”, "Direction of the internationalization of RMB”, and “RMB internationalization: risks and response”.

During the parallel sessions, scholars launched a heated discussion on “Exchange rate of RMB and RMB internationalization”, "Interest rate marketization and its channels”, "Monetary policy”, "Financial risk and prevention”, "Financial crisis and openness” and "Financial development”. The forum held two roundtable discussions focusing on “Monetary policy and banking sector transformation and development” and “International economic and financial situation” respectively. The first roundtable discussion was chaired by Professor Lu Jun, Deputy Dean of Lingnan College. The scholars participated in the discussion included Professor Jiang Chun, Head of Department of Finance, Economics and Management School, Wuhan University; Professor Li Cheng, Head of Department of Finance, School of Economics and Finance, Xi'an Jiaotong University; Professor Zhou Kaiguo, Head of Department of Finance, Lingnan College, Sun Yat-sen University; and Professor Wang Yang, Dean of School of Finance, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. The second roundtable discussion was chaired by Researcher Wen Bin, Supervisor of Institute of International Finance of Bank of China and Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Studies of International Finance. The scholars participated in the discussion included Professor Zhu Mengnan, Vice Dean of School of Economics, Xiamen University; Sun Jie, Director of the Editorial Board of The Journal of World Economy; Professor Jin Hongfei, Head of Department of International Finance, School of Finance, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics; and Professor Cui Riming, Deputy Dean of School of Economics, Liaoning University.

This forum received a total of 81 papers. Lingnan College academic expert group, the editorial board, the review group and evaluation experts of China International Finance Society conducted a preliminary review and selected 34 papers to participate in the forum. Three excellent papers were selected in the second round of review, and the authors of the three papers are respectively: Zhou Xianping and Li Biao from School of Finance, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law; Yang Jiaohui from Lingnan College, Sun Yat-sen University; and Zhang Qiaoyun and Wang Ning from School of Finance, Southwest University of Finance and Economics. The award-winning papers will be published in the latest issue of Studies of International Finance in 2013.
