The Guangdong Mount Danxia Management Committee informed the media the day before yesterday that scholars had accidentally discovered an insect species that had never been seen before when they were conducting a scientific investigation in Mount Danxia. It could probably be a new species that has never been discovered before. Two insect specialists from the Natural History Museum in the Czech Republic came to Mount Danxia recently for a 4-day investigation with Professor Jia Fenglong, an entomologist from Sun Yat-sen University.
The group of insect specialists investigated and took samples in order to find out whether this rare insect species is a new species in the world of insects. The specimens collected in the investigation will be carried to the Czech Republic for further study and final confirmation of its identity, and then scholars from both countries will jointly publish a research paper.
According to the staff of the scenic spot who accompanied the specialists when they were collecting specimens in the mountain, the investigation group has collected a dozen tiny samples of the insect, “these insect specimens are as small as sesames and they are black. Specialists from the Czech Republic showed great interest in the insect species they collected.” This insect species does not have a name yet since they are newly discovered. According to incomplete statistics, there are about 16 orders, 177 families, 793 genera and 1,046 species of known insects in Mount Danxia.
