Professor Tan Chee-Beng elected as president of ISSCO

Professor Tan Chee-Beng at the School of Sociology and Anthropology, Sun Yat-sen University, was elected as president of the International Society for the Studies of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO) for a term of four years at the 8th International Conference of ISSCO held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August 2013.

ISSCO was established in Los Angeles in 1992. Its members include institutes and individuals dedicated to the studies of Chinese overseas. The international conference of ISSCO is held every three years, covering the topics such as transnationalism, migration, globalization, localization, cultural exchanges, Chinese overseas and China.

Professor Tan Chee-Beng is an internationally renowned anthropologist and expert on Southeast Asia. He graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1974 and received his Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology, Cornell University in 1979. He taught in the National University of Singapore and Universiti Malaya. In 1996 he moved to teach at the Department of Anthropology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was appointed as a professor at the School of Sociology and Anthropology, Sun Yat-sen University in September 2012. He is the editor of Asian Anthropology and Journal of Chinese Overseas. His research interests include social/cultural anthropology, ethnic groups, identity, religion, food, Chinese overseas, etc. He has written and edited over 30 books and published more than 150 papers.
